Comments about Teavana Earl Grey White Tea:

I really only like black tea but decided to try this on a whim because I wanted something different. I can't stand anything sweet or fruity in terms of tea and this Earl Grey white tea seemed to fit the bill. It smells great and brewed up nicely. I made it iced by doubling the amount of tea I scooped, just do not double the time.
The caffeine level is really low which makes this a great night-time tea.

Comments about Teavana Earl Grey White Tea:

This is the WORST Earl grey I've tried as of yet. It tasted like soap. I did not taste real oil, but some kind of flavoring.

Made a non tea drinker a tea drinker

By Ian

from Colorado

Comments about Teavana Earl Grey White Tea:

I was not a tea drinker despite my wife being one and trying to get me to be one, until I found Teavana. This is definitely my favorite tea and has made me a tea drinker. I liek a few others (mostly fruity ones) but have found a few that I like.

This tea has a tendency of being too strong if you follow direction, use a little less tea and it has a better outcome. Has a nice flavor.

Disappointed Tea Junkie

By Tea Snob

from Albany, NY

Comments about Teavana Earl Grey White Tea:

I would walk over hot coals for a truly excellent loose leaf Earl Grey White tea. Sadly, this is not that tea.

Ten years ago, Teavana's Earl Grey White tea was perfect, from appearance (visually identifiable white whole tea leaves, a liberal sprinkling of blue cornflower petals) to its light bergamot scent (heavenly!) to its slightly forgiving steeping time (an extra minute of brewing would not turn it bitter). All that, plus natural bergamot oil flavoring and an extremely low caffeine content (one "dot" on their caffeine scale, 1-15 mg of caffeine per 8 oz). Perfection.

Fast forward to 2016. Last week I purchased some Earl Grey White loose tea at a Teavana store. When the salesperson showed me the tea in its large tin, I thought it didn't look quite the same as I remembered - it looked darker - but since the lighting in the store is a bit dim & very warm-toned, I shrugged it off. When he wafted the scent across the counter to me, it smelled just about as expected, but there were many competing smells in the store, so I wouldn't have been able to notice any difference. I asked about the caffeine level, & was told it was "three dots" on their caffeine scale (26-39 mg of caffeine vs. 40+ mg for a regular cup of coffee).

I was a little hesitant, as I'm on an extremely tight budget and it's a bit pricey. But since I had a $5.00 gift card and an in-store 20% off coupon, I purchased 4 ounces. What could go wrong?

Well, I just made my first pot from my new stash of tea. I let it brew for 4 minutes, as indicated on the bag. It was a bitter, acidic, undrinkable mess. I threw it away & tried again. On my second try, the water was exactly 175 degrees, brewed for exactly 2 minutes...success! Except that it tasted, well, not quite right. Okay, but not what I'd come to expect from Teavana.

Then I compared ingredients, new vs. old (yes, I still have the original stickers on my 10-yr-old tin) and there was my answer.

"New" Earl Grey White (from Teavana.com): white tea, artificial flavoring, marigold petals.
"Old" Earl Grey White (from original labeling): white tea, bergamot oil, blue cornflower petals.

Artificial ingredients. Marigold petals. And obviously a different white tea, or white tea added to a base of black tea, because of the higher caffeine content. I truly think it's a blend using mostly black tea, as Teavana.com states: "A modern turn on a world classic taste, this lighter and brighter Earl Grey has uplifting apricot nuances and tartly orange flavor from the elite and robust bergamot. All balanced with a smooth infusion of top shelf, superior white tea featuring less caffeine than our regular black Earl Grey tea."

Apricot?!? A "smooth *infusion* of...white tea", you say...what is the white tea infused into? Higher caffeine than the old version, almost as much as a cup of coffee? I can't do caffeine, on doctor's orders. That's why I was such a fan of the old version.

Nice try, Teavana, but no thank you. I understand the pressure of staying profitable in a volatile economy, but lowering the quality of your product will lose you some customers.

I have always bought my Earl Grey White from Teavana because I always got a consistently excellent product that I didn't mind paying a premium for. This recent purchase just feels like I wasted my money. I'll be looking for a new vendor to satisfy my high-end tea jones.

That said - if you are NOT hyper-critical of your tea like I am, this tea is a vast improvement on brewing from a tea bag. It's a good solid choice for a lighter-tasting caffeinated Earl Grey tea, and you will very likely enjoy it without any complaints like mine. Just don't over-steep it.

way too strong for a white tea

By sukiocha

from Florida

Comments about Teavana Earl Grey White Tea:

I tend to like the lighter teas, but started out with blacks like most, so earl grey is a favorite of mine. This tea however is not true to it's taste at all. It smells so strong of citrus, and not in a good way. The bergamot, while you can smell hints in the dry leaves, you can't taste that nostalgic flavor we all know and love at all. This tea is a vast disappointment all around. Given that white teas are usually light in flavor and fragrance by nature, this tea by comparison seems like someone dumped a whole bottle of perfume on it and thought it would suffice. I would not buy this tea again.
