Comments about Teavana Yunnan Golden Pu-erh Tea:

This is a very traditional Yunnan tea. It has a very unique smell. Makes a bold tea. I find I get 3 solid steeps each time.

This is not real Puerh!

By DrStabby

from Las Vegas NV

Comments about Teavana Yunnan Golden Pu-erh Tea:

Please please please, do not let this be your only experience with Puerh! I love Puerh, I drink it every single day. This is the lowest quality out there. The description doesn't mention anything that you need to know when buying this type of tea. Is it Sheng (Raw) or Shou (Ripe) Side note it's definitely a low quality ripe.
What mountain/farm did it come from?
Where was this Shou processed?
When were the leaves picked?

Most Puerh comes pressed in "cakes" and can be aged, it's kind of similar to wine. High quality properly stored Aged Sheng can get quite expensive. But there are some nice quality 8-10 year old cakes that are very reasonably priced and delicious.

Shou (Ripe) was invented to get an almost aged taste quickly, and without the price. They basically let the tea ferment under tarps to simulate aging. If done poorly you get something like this tea.
Puerh is a complex type of tea, and this doesn't do it any justice.

Comments about Teavana Yunnan Golden Pu-erh Tea:

This tea tastes and smells like fish, and not in the good, oceanic green tea way. I mean the disgusting, caught three days ago and not refrigerated kind of way. Somewhere in this world, there has to be a better pu-erh. Please tell me, Teavana, my favorite and the best Tea brand, cannot look harder for a pu-erh tea of finer quality. I'd even pay more if it just tasted better.

Comments about Teavana Yunnan Golden Pu-erh Tea:

Pu-erh is an acquired taste and will not be everyone's favorite. It's a deeply earthy, almost composty flavor which can put many people off. But I really like Pu-erh tea.

Honestly, I have had better. It seems watery, even with almost 2 tsps of leaves, but I suspect that's because it's blended with black tea to make it more appealing to the average population. This would be a great tea to start with if you were looking to dip a toe into Pu-erh. For me, it's a little too mild for my tastes.

Loved it! It does have a slight earthy scent which didn't bother me. But it tastes pretty good. I drink this tea EVERYDAY and I've actually even lost a few lbs.

Not my cup of tea

By Seanb

from Philadelphia pa

Comments about Teavana Yunnan Golden Pu-erh Tea:

This was a weird one for sure. Once brewed it smelled of fish and it turns you off. But after the first sip, It kind of redeems it self, it tasted earthy, grassy, mushroomy with a smokey aftertaste. I didn't taste the sweetness they mentioned in the description, which would have helped it greatly. I will play around with it and see if it grows on me. Right now this is not my cup of tea, it is my cup of tea, but you it's not... You know what I mean.

An acquired taste.

By Gainesville Gator

from Gainesville, FL

Comments about Teavana Yunnan Golden Pu-erh Tea:

It is very earthy, which I can see why many people equate a "fishy" smell to it. What I do is steep the tea once for 30 seconds and then dump the liquid. I then steep it again for 3-5 mins with water around boiling temperature, which tends to reduce the earthy smell. I do not mind the smell as it doesn't come off "fishy" to me, but I do agree this is an acquired taste. I blend with Early Grey Cremé, which gives a wonderfully flavored tea that is stronger than the usual Earl Grey tea I drink.

PRO: A little goes a long way, flavorful, a great tea to use in a blend.

Cons: Smell can be off-putting to some.

Great Price on Pu-erh, Mediocre Flavor

By Tea Connoisseur

from Salt Lake City, UT

Comments about Teavana Yunnan Golden Pu-erh Tea:

For everyone saying that this tastes fishy... yes Pu-erh tea normally tastes fishy. That is because it is fermented.

Having drank traditional Pu-erh tea for a long time, it had become a favorite of mine. It is so smooth and rich in flavor. It can be re-steeped more than other teas, usually up to about a dozen times. It is considered one of the most premium and sought after teas right now. However, the Teavana version of this is not quite to that standard.

Don't get me wrong, I found this to be a nice tea, but compared to other Pu-erh teas available for the same pricepoint it does not compare. I only get about 4-6 steeps off this batch compared to nearly a dozen from Pu-erh cakes I purchase imported from China.

The flavors are indicative of Pu-erh without the depth. So while the flavor profile seems to be accurate, I find it weaker than other Pu-erhs. Pu-erh tea is known to be one of the most bold teas out there and I find that this variety from Teavana compares more similarly to a black tea in strength.

Overall, its good but not great. The best part is that I can easily find it locally (from my teavana), whereas true Pu-erh requires some serious planning and usually higher minimums.
