I've been drinking tea since I was about 8, and I started sampling high quality teas when I was in high school. Black dragon pearl is my favorite tea, hands down.
This isn't a fussy tea like some can be; a little too hot or a little too long isn't going to dramatically change the flavor. I found that 3-4 pearls equaled one teaspoon, though that might vary by taste.
I take my tea with a little bit of sugar and milk. The milk especially enhances the interesting flavor profile of this tea. It is slightly malty, but the best word to describe it is chocolatey. This tea is imbued with rich chocolate notes, and when combined with the smooth mouth feel, you could almost imagine you were drinking a cup of hot chocolate rather than tea... and yet, you never lose sight of the tea flavor either.
I received this tea from my parents for Christmas. My mother told the salesperson that I love strong black tea, and he immediately pulled this tin off the shelf. In customary fashion, he waved the lid over the tea leave so she could catch a hint of the aroma. When she smelled the notes of chocolate, she knew it was perfect for me: chocolate and tea are my two culinary indulgences.

I can't figure out what I'm missing that everyone else has found in this tea? I like super-strong tea with cream and sugar and just can't get this to brew to my liking. Once I got the chocolate notes others have mentioned but of all the time/leaf quantity combinations I've tried I can get neither a strong or flavorful cup. I tried it black (before cream) and preferred the flavor but adding any amount of cream seemed to dull it to near flavourless. The fellow in the shop told me I'd get 5-6 brews out of the leaves making the high price a bargain; I don't find the first steep very strong and can barely get a second even with adding new leaves. The price is steep, the steep is low. Just a bummer tea for me.

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
As a relative newcomer to loose leaf tea, I must say that Black Dragon Pearl completely defies the bitter astringency inherent in many black teas; especially bagged black tea. After steeping four pearls in 8 ounces for a four minute duration, you have a mildly aromatic amber brew that is refreshing, yet still energizing. Watching the leaves unfurl as it steeps is a nice prequel to a great cup of tea. For those who may like a sweeter tea, a few bits of German rock sugar will do the trick nicely. Black Dragon also withstands several infusions--a truly great black tea experience.

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
I love strong black tea. I usually drink this hot with honey, and it's actually pretty decent. I tried it iced with a little sugar for dinner tonight, and it was way too malty for my liking. If you like malty teas, then this one is good for you. If you like something a little smoother, then I suggest something else.

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
Great for beginners, because this tea reminds me of what is classically served in most east-asian restaurants with your meal. Four or 5 pearls per cup yields at least 3 good 12oz (joli mug) cups of tea (can brew up to 5 and still get a definite black tea taste and color). I find it most enjoyable with a bit of honey and sugar, mmm mm! Lovely rich malty, but almost chocolately taste too. Taste and aroma couple well to soothe stomach aches. Can't seem to oversteep or make this one bitter with time like most teavana teas. The longer the steep, the better it seems to taste! Enjoy!

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
I am a huge tea fan but I am also very stingy with my finances... I just recently adventured into the Higher End Tea society. I am definitely a fan of the full/loose leaf tea's and can tell a difference from the L-i-p-t-o-n-s to Teavana's teas. Sure this is pricey and I will probably see if there are other more affordable alternatives, but for a Black tea fan... this is GREAT. For me, the perfect blend is about 4 pearls. Smooth, flavorful and rich with multiple taste notes.

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
This is the best black tea Teavana offers. The Golden Monkey is a bit over-priced imo, and the other "high end" black teas have a hard time tasting good enough for the money you spend on their own.
Being a black tea, it is easy to cut the steeping short. This particular tea complicates things by coming in pearls, and is prone to a weaker finish. However, if done correctly the pearl packaging definately aids in the flavor and reaches a good balance of sweet and pungent that few black teas match.
Great for a morning energy boost, or after work pick-me-up. 10/10

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
Brewed at recommended strength (7 pearls @ 190-200 for 4mins [about 10oz]), I could hardly finish it, super earthy tones and very pungent. Retried it with 5 pearls @ 190-200 for 3 mins (again for 10oz) and love it. Golden Monkey (prefered) has a more cocoa flavor to it than this but very delightful. Also I always put in 2 sugars.

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
I used to drink Yellow Label Lipton tea, that's how I learned to put milk & sugar in my black tea because somehow plain black tea is just, well plain. And sometimes bitter, especially as the beverage grows colder. Which is true in my case since it takes me a long time to finish a cup when I'm surfing the web.
I can't believe I'm going back to just plain black ole tea. Well, there certainly nothing plain in this one! I just put a bit of German rock sugar in it & my goodness, the best black tea ever!
A bit pricey, who am I kidding? It's dang expensive but you can brew it 3x, just add one more pearl on the 3rd brew and it's good. I only use 3 pearls in 10 0z water anyway so it balances the price a bit. How strong you want it depends on how many pearls you put but bitterness is never an issue.
So if you just want to taste the smooth body of plain black tea without other flavors overwhelming it. Try this, you can't go wrong on this one.

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
So I just went to Teavana for the first time yesterday since this past week I began to drink tea everyday. This was one of the two teas I bought. Currently I'm drinking my second cup of it today. I don't really understand how everyone is saying it tastes chocolaty or malty... but I do enjoy this tea as a tea you can go to anytime. I'm very excited about going back to Teavana to try some more teas!

Comments about Teavana Black Dragon Pearl Black Tea:
I adore all kinds of tea and am an occasional coffee drinker. This tea has a wonderful full chocolate/coffee undertones. The only drawback is you have to wait until the 2nd or 3rd steep to really get it. The key to this tea is precise preparation, water just under boiling, steep for 3 min and presto. I did not have to add more tea in the second and third steep, but water temp. needs to be perfect.
