Brand: Teavana

Known in China as “Pearl Tea,” this tea owes its name to the shape of its tightly rolled tea leaves, which early European explorers compared with the shape of gunpowder. When infused, the leaves unfurl to produce a dark-green tea with a pungent flavor and piquant fragrance.

Love it. Was replacing my high quality Chinese green tea(bought in person in China). While this is definitely not the Chinese green tea I had, it replaced it pretty well. Like the bold flavor. I had three infusions of it before dumping the leaves for a new round and it tasted good enough after the third infusion.

Comments about Teavana Gunpowder Green Tea:

I've always had Japanese green tea before, and it seems like no matter how careful I am with the temperature and the steeping time, it comes out too bitter/vegetal for me. I had almost sworn off plain green teas, but I decided to give this one a go before I did, and I totally fell in love. This is so different from the Japanese green teas. It's almost smoky, and it's very full bodied and warming. If you don't like sencha, etc, but think you'd like the lightness of a green tea, give this one a try!

Comments about Teavana Gunpowder Green Tea:

Very different than other green teas I've tried, it's stronger, a little more bitter, and has a fuller body. I haven't tried blending it with any other teas, but it might be nice with something a little sweet. For now, it's wonderful with just a heaping tsp of sugar.

Comments about Teavana Gunpowder Green Tea:

Gunpowder is a full-flavoured, very intense tea. Many people here have compared it to the Japanese greens, like sencha - but Gunpowder's flavour really falls into an entirely different category. It's easily made bitter by water that is too hot or a steep time that's too long, but if you're careful and conscious it is completely worth the hassle.

Comments about Teavana Gunpowder Green Tea:

This is a strong, aromatic tea that contains a high amount of caffeine when compared to other teas. It has very little aroma before brewing but takes on a full body afterward.

I find this tea to be very invigorating. It's high caffeine content makes it a perfect tea to assist in switching from coffee to tea. It's strong flaver might overpower some who expect green tea to be "grassy".

I brew this tea at 175F to 180F for 3 minutes. The slightly higher brewing temp strengthens the flavor. I do not overbrew it as it will become bitter if left too long. This tea has a cloudy green color when brewed.

I also prefer to mix this tea with Oolong for an interesting blend (brewed at 180F for 3 minutes).

Comments about Teavana Gunpowder Green Tea:

So many people I offer this to assume that because of the name it is a very strong tasting green tea. I actually find it to be a little smoother and less bitter than the Japanese green teas--like Sencha, for example. It is more of a brownish color (as opposed to the yellow green of Japanese green teas). For lack of a better way to describe it (I am no tea expert), I find it to taste like almost a cross between an oolong and a sencha. It's a nice change of pace for people who enjoy green tea but have probably always had the Japanese green teas.
