I have been searching for a tea for morning- I like to have a strong tea with a bit of cream and sugar. After trying a few other blends, I finally found it in this tea. I LOVE the flavor. I dont really like coffee, never have, so I was a bit concerned with the description stating it has a coffee flavor. I do not find that at all in the flavor of the tea. I am experimenting with how strong I like it by using different amounts for brewing. I think I will try to mix this with a nice black tea, but really, on its own, its very enjoyable. The flavor is deep and rich without being bitter. I purchased a small amount to try, but once I run out I am definitely getting a large stock of this to have on hand.

Reading through the online reviews, I wanted a cheaper tea as I shop at Teavana WAY too much (currently have about 11 different teas in my cabinet). My Morning Mate (MMM) ran out and read that this MateVana (MV)was better than the MMM. WRONG! MV has nothing over MMM. Quite disappointed to have bought this as even though this is very smooth in comparison to MMM, it's flat... really flat chocolate. I tend to mix this one in the morning with Honeybush Vanilla, and still not that happy with it.

Pros about MV over MMM is that if you steep it longer than 5 min it doesn't get bitter... still stays quite smooth, so you can easily mix a more bitter tea (Earl Gray Creme) with it and it will mask the bitterness from oversteeping if that does so happen.

Cons about MV over MMM is that it doesn't have a dynamic pallet to it like the MMM. Don't try to save $1.00, just buy the MMM.

I found this really weak. I brewed it with up to 4 tablespoons/cup of water and tried adding sweetener, and still found it weak. It does have an absolutely wonderful smell - maybe I'll use the leftovers as potpourri.

I drink a lot of straight teas without sweeteners (e.g. Teavana's Gyokuro, Nine Dragon Golden Needle, Silver Yin Zhen Pearls, and Jasmine Pearl are all wonderful), as well as European style espresso in the mornings. I prefer Teavana for the straight teas, but I prefer another brand's Chocolate Mate product to this one, both for the higher caffeine content (their straight Mate has more caffeine than this Mate mixed with black) and flavor.

I first started drinking this tea shortly after I quit smoking 5 years ago. I passed a teavana store and decided to sample a few teas since coffee had a strong connection to smoking for me and I needed a coffee replacement. I fell so in love with this tea that I buy it in 2# bags. My only disappointment was not feeling the caffeine kick promised by the salesperson and the store description. Then I read the ingredients on the bag and found it is mixed with rooibos, so it doesn't supply the amount of caffeine I was used to or expecting.

This blend tastes much like the Morning Mate which also tastes like coffee. I don't understand trying to make a tea that tastes like coffee. If you like coffee - drink coffee. I ordered some of the Morning Mata and some of the Mate Vanna as a morning pick-me-up drink but was disappointed in both. Order the Samurai Chai or Raspberry Mate if you don't like the taste of coffee.

I've been using loose-leaf tea for a couple of years now, so I'm no stranger to the brewing process, but it seems that no matter what I did to this tea, I never got a true taste. The aroma is seriously amazing, but the tea itself is pretty weak. I've tried more tea leaves and longer steeping time, neither of which did anything for me. When I first tried this tea I was just getting off coffee, and I was one of those annoying coffee snobs. At first I didn't think I liked it, was even going to give it away. I love the taste of this tea. If you were to mix half black tea and half coffee, it would be similar to this. There is a lot of flavor, and its great with a little milk and sugar, does taste a little like a chai latte then. I absolutely love this tea! First time I tasted it I was shocked at the chocolate and nutty flavor. Never had anything like it before! I'm not a coffee drinker as coffee is way too bitter for me, but I do like tea and this tea isn't too bitter. The caffeine does pep me up when I need a lift but doesn't cause the buzz a lot of caffeine drinks can (at least for me). A salesman recommended this tea when I told him I was trying to refrain from drinking my daily homemade mocha latte. The caffeine and acid was wrecking havoc on my digestive system. He told me to add a little milk. I didn't find it a rich as my daily mocha, so I pushed it to the back and continued my bad habit. So one day, I got the idea to brew it strong and then add more milk and chocolate. Similar to the Chai latte. Well, I might have one mocha a week now. That's just to finish off my coffee beans. LOL! You'll be surprised by how well the chocolate and the spiciness of the tea pairs. I've become a tea enthusiast since I discovered Teavana.

You need a taste for this tea to enjoy it. Some things just aren't for certain people. This one wasn't for me but I've had other friends who love it. I always mixed it with almond biscotti black tea since the mate vana alone just didn't have enough flavor for me but perhaps that's my fault for having such an affinity for rooibos teas and flavored greens. I started drinking this tea at work, and although I most often drink tea there are some mornings when I just crave hot chocolate and I was looking for a healthier replacement. First of all, this tea has a fantastic, strong aroma and a rich, lovely brown color (perfect for a glass mug). Second, it has the perfect chocolate sweetness without the oversugary feeling of most hot chocolates. Third, it's great for rebrewing which is perfect for me because I try to get at least three cups.

Cautions: I use a bit more than the recommended 1.5 tsp to get a good, strong flavor. The brewing time is long 5-6 minutes. It does have all the caffeine of coffee so beware drinking it in the evening. Finally, I think it tastes best piping hot, so not a great one for savoring a single cup for a long time.

This is my favorite of the mixes I first chose at Teavana. The flavor is full and complex, lends itself well to drinking either plain or with milk and sugar, and it doesn't become bitter.

This tea is by far one of my favorites. The flavor is wonderfully rich, tastes brilliant with the rock sugar, and it's a great way to relax. Also, it won't become bitter if accidentally left to steep for too long. I read about this tea in an email from Teavana claiming it to be the "coffee kicker", and was looking to quit my 20-something-year coffee habit anyway, so I went out and bought it to see if it would really work as a replacement. Surprise to me- it did! It has the same kick to get me going in the morning, but without the bitter aftertaste of coffee. The flavor kind of puts me in mind of espresso, with a hint of chocolate, and a little bit nutty too. If I want another cup, I just add a half teaspoon more to the leaves, and it tastes perfect! I do not miss my coffee one bit, and I recommend this to anyone who wants to switch from coffee to a healthier alternative.

I'm trying to give up coffee, since I find it makes me agitated...but since I also need a morning pick-me-up, I've been drinking mate instead. I do find that it is a much gentler "buzz" than a coffee buzz.

I do enjoy mate straight but was curious about Teavana's mate blends, and thought that this seemed like a good entry-point. It did not disappoint. A five minute steep in my french press, and it was just perfect: a warm, malty, faintly nutty sort of blend, much more "coffee like" than very, very "green" tasting straight mate (I LIKE straight mate, but it can be a bit like drinking mowed grass).

My only complaint is that it did not seem to hold up very well to a second steep, which surprised me as straight mate usually holds up for several brewings and Teavana teas in general take repeating steepings very well. I might try steeping it eight minutes next time on the second steep tomorrow, and see if that helps.

This is the first tea I've tried from Teavana, and the first Mate I've ever had. It is absolutely delicious! I love this tea in the morning because it gives the slightest lift energetically and it takes the place of all the high calorie trendy drinks people have gotten in the habit of drinking. I purchased this at my local Teavana store and the sales associate described it as the tea equivalent of hot chocolate. After trying it myself, I can say that is a pretty good description. The scent is heavenly and the flavor is chocolately and a bit smoky. I don't sweeten it or mix it with any other teas yet, although I may add a bit of milk sometimes.

If you're a chocoholic, this would be a good tea for you to try. I also think it would make an excellent dessert tea. I highly recommend it!

A store opened near my college and immediately I was hooked to the prodcuts. I love tea, but I have a peculiar palate so I started with a popular Fruta Bomba tea, which is excellent iced. The Matevanna paired with Roobios Chai is one of the best teas I have ever tried. I love coffee but I will never ever go back. I like my tea sweet so I put some extra rock sugar in. I was worried about over-stepping or adding too much or too little but you CANNOT mess up the pairing. There is no bitter taste, for a bolder flavor I add more than the suggested serving size. Absolutely stunning flavor, smooth, revitalizing, with a hint of chocolate and spice! any first timer should try this blend. I suggest drinking after breakfast in the morning to suppress snack cravings and during the workday for a pick-me-up.

I drink this tea at every chance I get. It is so yummy. It spells slightly like a very, very fine tobacco. The chocolate and almond tones are superb. You definitely have to let it steep as long as the package says for the best flavor. Perfect with just a bit of honey or as is.

I just started getting into tea and Teavana, but what I can say is that you can't go wrong with this tea. I love the caffeine, I mix it with almost all the other tea I buy just to put caffeine in it, and I almost never drink coffee anymore. I really feel the energy last and not give me jitters, crashing, and sleeplessness. It just keeps me awake and energized.
The only thing I can say bad about it is that when I mix it with other teas to get the caffeine, it's not flavorless, however that's hardly a downside, because it blends very nicely no problem.

Absolutely beautiful stuff. I tried it at the store blended with the Rooibos Chai. Bought a few oz of each and then went online to order a Lb of each after a few days! I like the idea of this tea, but I find it bitter or having a strange tang to it (which does come with some mates). I much prefer My Morning Mate, which has a similar flavor profile but doesn't have the strange bitterness.

I just bought this tea and it is fantastic. I will always keep it in stock. It's like a mix of coffee and hot chocolate. I will never go to a coffee shop again and by a $5 coffee. I put about a half a tsp of rock sugar in it. It is great for a morning jolt, as well as a night-time treat.

I tried Teavana at an old friend's house and became hooked. I've always preferred coffee and I could not stand drinking the supermarket teas....until I ordered Mate Vana. I'm a big coffee drinker, but I was impressed with this. Don't leave the tea bag in your cup for long though, or else it will taste bitter. But this tea definitely encourages me to drink more tea and less coffee. I was a big coffee drinker until I discovered this tea. I work early in the morning and was tired of having to drink a steady amount of coffee throughout the day to avert a crash. MateVana gets me up and going in the morning without worrying about slowing down later in the day.

I have been a coffee drinker all my life. I occasionally drank tea, but preferred coffee to anything else. I was given this tea as a gift by a tea enthusiast friend, and was immediately smitten! Mixed: Matevana , Rooibos, Chai makes a Great Combo! A friend gave me this to try and was the best thing for my Saturday morning pick me up which was better than coffee (if you get tired of the same o cup). A little goes a long ways. I made 2 cups out of the one serving. It's great hot or cold. I had a boost of energy & curbed my appetite which stopped me from snacking all day. My kids took a sip and loved it.

Finding a tea that said it was good for coffee drinkers was kind of exciting. I was also really excited when I smelled this tea, it smelled so rich, smooth, and almost mocha-like. However, I was really disappointed when I took my first sip. After being brewed, it smells differently than before and the taste is very weak. It's actually reminiscent of a plain popcorn aftertaste. I really can't express how disappointed I am. I only bought 2oz, so just to get rid of it, I'll be mixing it with chai or something stronger. Won't buy again.

This tea has the caffeine of coffee but without the jitters. I bought this a few months ago to try as a coffee substitute and fell in love with it. I start each morning with this and a teaspoon and half of honey, and I am ready to go. It has a rich, but smooth flavor. Rarely does a morning pass that I don't start the day with this tea. Two thumbs up. If I had a third arm, I would give it another thumbs up.

I got some Teavana products as a gift from my employer, who sent them to me in Finland. I have been very impressed so far with the items.

Though this tea does have caffiene-like properties, I don't find that a cup in the evening does us any particular harm as we both find drinking tea in itself to be soothing. The effect is nothing really like coffee - no stomach jitters, no sense of a crash, etc.

I couldn't call it malty, or spicy per se. It's more..creamy. It has a pleasingly complex, full, yet smooth flavour - I get notes of bourbon, vanilla, in addition to the chocolate and delicate coffee references. Definitely it seems to straddle the "coffee to tea" flavour gap, but is so delightfully smooth and easy to drink.

Well, I tried it in the store and it was delicious. I should have known better than to buy a tea with chocolate in it though, I don't know about anyone else, but chocolate puts me to sleep. This tea is more appropriate for evening, as it makes me feel drowsy. It has tiny pieces of minty white chocolate and sweet dark chocolate. It tastes delicious, I like it iced. But it rather puts me to sleep than wakes me up.It is very tasty, even without sweetener, but if you r looking for a pick me up I recommend strawberry pu-erh.

I am a five cup a day, black or oolong tea drinker. I drink with milk and a little sugar. Not fond of flavored teas (except the almond biscotti).

This tea was so awful I had to toss it down the drain. It is not for someone who likes real tea leaves: teas that are not herbal. It tasted like a variation of coffee (very similar to coffee flavor you find in desserts like tiramisu) - so if you dislike any of the coffee flavorings around, do not buy this tea. If you are a coffee drinker, switching to tea, this might be a really good tea for you to try.

I think a more traditional tea consumer may be put off by this however, everyone I've served this tea to has enjoyed it and told me how wonderful it is. I enjoy this tea in the morning or after dinner. I use a 20oz cup and three & 1/2 teaspoons of tea and three teaspoons of Rock Cane sugar, it's more of a dessert tea but the flavor is so wonderful. I would highly recommend using the "Perfect Tea Maker" when infusing this or any other tea.

I'm a coffee drinker who acknowledges that tea is probably better for me, so I've been making the switch to tea - at least a 50% switch. I LOVE my coffee. Anyway, this tea was suggested by the clerk at Teavana, and I bought 2 ozs. That was a week ago, an it's almost gone.I really like it. The taste has been compared to coffee. That's not true, but it doesn't taste like tea either.

It's a great substitute for coffee. How's that? No astringency, no bitterness, no dry mouth. No tea breath. So far, it's my favorite.

I wanted a full caffeine tea to give me the health benefits of tea along with the wake-up abilities of coffee. But I just want it to taste like tea. This variety has very strong spice and fruity flavors which I don't like at all. I would consider it undrinkable which is unfortunate since I spent a lot of money for it. Can't they blend a full caffeine tea that isn't all flavored? It also has oil floating on top. Is this common in tea?

This tea has a great mix of flavoring. I enjoy the smoothness of this tea. By far it is my favorite. I do tend to brew MatéVana a bit longer then recommended. This does not make the tea much bitter, but adds more flavoring. On occasion an extra amount is desirable. MatéVana is good as is unsweetened, and also with a small spoon of the German Rock Cane Sugar. This is highly recommended and drinkable hot or cold. I am writing this review for the purpose of advising coffee drinkers, not for the tea itself.

I started drinking tea to get away from a nasty coffee addiction that I haven't fully kicked just yet. While it states that this is a great tea for coffee drinkers, I brew coffee with double the grounds, no cream/sugar, so this was very weak for me. For a strong coffee drinker I would try the Assam tea, that was more what I was looking for.

This is a very good tea, but for replacing a morning cup of coffee I use the bolder Assam.

I LOVE this tea. I went to the store to buy a different tea, but they had this one brewing and I smelled it as soon as I walked in. Once I tried it, everything else just fell away. This is so soothing. It starts to relax me as soon as I smell it and once I taste it, I only wish I had a larger mug. I like my tea a little stronger so I steep it for 8 minutes and although I normally don't add sweetener, a 1/2 teaspoon of honey just brings out the chocolate and nuts flavors. So fantastic!

Mild and mellow, with a slightly nibby flavor from the cacao nibs. It's inoffensive, a touch sweet, and while it's decent and refreshingly different alone, it's better mixed with Rooibos Chai. It does have a fine grain to it, though, so it'll tend to leak out of your strainer and drop a coating of little particles all over the bottom of the cup.

I thought this tea was great, and that it is a much better way to engergize yourself then drinking coffee. Like the description says it is a bette alternative to coffee and I constantly see it. I drank it in the evening and it kept me up rrreeeaaalllyyy late. In two words "Great Tea".

Wonderful, wonderful chocolately flavor. Completely addictive when sweetened with Agave Syrup.

Although it doesn't taste like coffee, it is a very good replacement for coffee is a has a robust, very rich taste.

It was the scent of this tea that got me to try it. I'm so glad I did. Since I started drinking MateVana, I no longer drink coffee. The flavor is smooth and very unique. I generally sweeten with rock sugar.

My cousin is a frequent customer at the Teavana store in the Dallas, TX Galleria. She gave me 1 serving each of the following teas: Rooibos Rose Garden, White Ayurvedic Chai, Samurai Chai Mate, and last but not least Matevana, my new favorite tea. She says they are all fair trade, also, which is a big deal to me. I will buy my teas here, from now on!

I am new to tea drinking so am not sure about my comments on the tea finish and body. However, I tasted a sample of this tea at the Court of King of Prussia store and found it to be absolutely delicious. I add a few rocks of cane sugar to bring out the aroma and taste, and will be heading back to the store to sample and purchase other tea flavors. Yum.

I tried switching to tea from coffee with Teavana green tea at first, which left something to be desired. Then I tried this flavor and fell in love- I'm hooked! Now I would so much rather drink this than heavy coffee and sugary, fatty flavored cream!

I cannot believe that anyone would write a bad review for MateVana. My boyfriend bought a tea set for me for my birthday in July and no day since then has been right unless it was started with a fresh cup of MateVana. Several cups of MateVana even helped me get through my 1st semester of graduate school, including a pretty rough stats final. I have never mixed anything with MateVana as I think it is perfect all on its own. I am very happy with with this product, especially because it means that I never have to drink coffee again. No, it's not your traditional "tea" because it was designed to be a replacement for your morning cup of coffee so please keep that in mind when reading and writing poor reviews.

My 2 oz sample came in a gift box. I wouldn't drink it by itself--just my preference/taste. I tried it with equal parts of Cacao Mint Black tea---it's deliciously minty with a hint of chocolate.

This tea combines several of my favorite things, chocolate and caffeine. I love coffee, but this has a taste that allows you to have less caffeine, but it is just as enjoyable!

I mix it with Rooibos carmel, now with hazelnut, add sugar and milk, it has a smooth texture and gives off the hints of slight coconut flavor to me, every time I sip it,I close my eyes and say thats good tea, it's my little get away. Everyone always wants to know what smells so good at my job.

Great aroma, but the taste takes some getting used to. After I started putting cream in it and treating it like coffee I enjoyed it more, but it's really not one of my favorites. I drink it for the pick-me-up it provides. I don't drink caffeine so the medicinal properties of this tea are a bonus.
