Somayaki (Soma ware) is characterized by the blue-green crackled surface, achieved by using an apple ash and sumi-kannyu (crackle) glaze. Soma ware is known for its intricate double-walled construction; the inner and outer pieces are thrown separately & allowed to quickly dry, becoming slightly firm before they are joined. This keeps the tea hot on the inside while maintaining a cool exterior. The galloping horse design is called "hashiri-uma", and has been recreated since the mid-1600's when the motif was requested by a feudal lord to show pride in his region's ability to breed and train quality horses. 18 ounces

Comments about Teavana Year of the Horse Barrel Teapot<br />:

This teapot makes a perfect cup of green tea, and does so in timeless style. This type of pottery dates to 1690 in Japan- I had been using a very old somayaki ware cup for my tea drinking that my dad had got back in the 50's or thereabouts... and I was totally floored when I saw a matching teapot in a Teavana store last year! It immediately went on my xmas list and was the high point of my gift opening on Christmas day! Steeped in tradition, and an unbelievable value here on sale (!) -I don't even know where else you could find one without importing it yourself! My only complaint is that they don't carry some of the other styles available in this beautiful pottery!!! Please Teavana, carry some more!!! Finally, I should point out that this teapot is NOT 18oz., it's more like 12oz filled up to the rim, which of course you would not want to do... so, consider this a "single cup" pot, filled about halfway it makes, as I said at the start, an absolutely perfect 6 oz cup of green tea. To conclude, I love mine!
