Frequently Asked Questions at Teavana

These are the most common questions we receive from customers. If you don't find an answer to your question here, please Contact Us here.
  1. How many calories and carbohydrates are in your teas?
It is extremely difficult to pinpoint the nutritional facts on tea since it is a natural product, like a fruit or vegetable. Calories and carbohydrates cannot be calculated due to the minuscule amount found in tea leaves. Without milk or sugar added to tea, tea contains very little calories (usually under 5 calories per cup).
  1. What type of plastic is used in your tea makers?
Our manufacturer is focused on providing the finest quality TeaMakers and Tea Steepers to support the fine quality teas and a healthy Teavana lifestyle. We are constantly evaluating the products we carry and wish to provide our guests with the highest quality products to promote health, wisdom and happiness.

Our Perfect TeaMakers and Easy Tea Steeper are made primarily of food-grade polycarbonate that contains no Bisphenol A (BPA). The use of polycarbonate plastic for food contact applications continues to be recognized as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Commission Scientific Committee on Food, the United Kingdom Food Standards Agency, the Japan Ministry for Health and Welfare and other regulatory authorities worldwide.

The Perfect TeaMaker and Easy Tea Steeper can be recycled under plastics recycling symbol 7. Recycling symbol #7 is a "catch all" category of plastics that includes plastic blends and even plastics made from plants that are compostable. Recent news stories have stated that all #7 plastics should be considered bad, however that is simply not the case because #7 refers to such a wide variety of plastics. There are metal components on the Perfect TeaMaker that must be disassembled before recycling. The metal components can also be recycled.
  1. How do I care for a Cast Iron Teapot?
Before first use: Using mild soap, wash the inside (do not wash outside) with hot water and a soft sponge. Dry inside thoroughly, allow outside to air dry.

After each use, simply rinse with hot water and towel dry the inside of the teapot, allowing the outside to air dry. After toweling dry, let each piece air-dry separately to prevent rusting. Reassemble pot when completely dry.

A natural mineral layer (a patina) will gradually develop on the inside of the pot: this is beneficial for health and flavor.

Avoid contact with salt and oil, as they will damage the finish on the outside of the pot. If oil mars the pot, it cannot be removed.

We recommend, when using a Cast Iron teapot, not to place it directly on the stove. Even though it is made from cast iron, it is also hand-crafted and has been painted and coated with enamel. Putting your cast iron directly on the stove will damage your teapot. Not for use in microwave or conventional ovens.

When cleaning your teapot it is also important to wash with mild soap and hot water (no scrubbing) and allow your teapot to air dry; infuser and lid separately. Do not allow water or wet leaves to sit in teapot overnight. Never soak the pot in water or put in the dishwasher.
  1. How much will 2oz. of tea make?
2 oz. of tea will brew between 25-30 8oz cups of tea, unless otherwise noted.
  1. How long does tea last?
Tea will last 2-3 weeks outside of an air-tight canister. In a tin canister, your tea can last up to a year.
  1. How much tea will your Teavana tin canisters hold?
Teavana carries tin canisters in 6oz., 8oz., and 16oz/1lb sizes. These sizes are approximate, since some teas are lighter or bulkier than others.
  1. How do I make tea using the Cast Iron Teapots?
Boil your water to recommended temperature. Then add your tea leaves to your strainer inside your teapot. When your water is finished, pour you water into your teapot covering your tea leaves. Let your tea brew for recommend time, and then remove your strainer with your leaves. Your tea is ready to serve.
  1. How do I make iced tea?
Ice tea is made in a very similar way to hot tea. However, you should double the amount of tea used as well as the amount of sweetener. If it is an herbal tea, also steep it for twice as long (other teas should not be steeped longer). Simply pour your tea over ice once it is done steeping.

  1. What is rock sugar?
Rock cane sugar is pure sugar that is crystallized through a specific heating and cooling process that originated in Germany. This process allows large sugar crystals to form, and in addition, the crystals are further sweetened with the addition of caramelized sugar (cooked until it turns a rich brown). The large rock crystals are coated with the sugar mixture and allowed to dry. Rock cane sugar is less refined and tends to be milder than granulated sugar, causing a more subtle flavor and enhancing the nuances of a fine cup of tea.

The rock sugar will sweeten your tea without altering it. Our brown sugar contains molasses so it will enhance the flavor of your tea.
  1. What is the process for making Organic teas?
Organic tea is grown according to standards set by certified organic programs. Farmers emphasize the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations.
